Family Radio Service (FRS) is a low power 2-way radio far away from the CB (Citizen Band) and can be used by you, your family and friends to communicate among yourselves. With a power output of only 1/2 watt you should expect a communication range of about one mile, although varying factors can have an effect on this range.

You can use any of the 14 FRS channels on a "take turns" basis. FRS channels are not assigned to any specific individual or organization. Some less expensive FRS radios do not have all 14 channels.

In Canada, the territorial limits of the fifty United States, the District of Columbia, and the Caribbean and Pacific Insular areas ("U.S."). You may also operate your FRS unit on or over any other area of the world, except within the territorial limits of areas where radio communications are regulated by another agency or within the territorial limits of any foreign government. No license is needed or issued for FRS radios.
