The following information has been provided to help you understand a little about "cellular jargon" so that you will be confident in your choice of system, product, plan and supplier (we, of course, hope you choose Prairie Mobile!).
Your investment into freedom will depend on your choice of a product with the features and accessories that are best suited to your style of usage. A basic cell phone can be purchased for $0.00 or up to a few hundred dollars (depending on the cellular plan & term) but like everything else "you get what you pay for" so you would be wise to ask about the quality & reliability of the product you are considering. If you are concerned about the increase in cost for a better phone then your other option is to just add your choice of cell phone to your monthly telephone bill for as little as $2.50 per month. These monthly payment plans are usually 2 or 3 year agreements and you own it at the end of 24 months. If your phone has an accident that not even our phone paramedics can repair you will still owe the balance of payments.
The price of freedom will depend on the Cellular Plan you choose, the plans start at $20 per month with 150 minutes of calling included but the average user should expect to pay $30 - $70 per month. If you need a phone just for emergencies or you want to control exactly how much you spend, a good choice would be the Prepaid Cellular Service plan No contracts to sign, no credit - no problem, just buy a phone card, a phone and have the phone programmed.
The following will explain a little about a few of the more common systems available. The SaskTel cellular network uses AMPS (analog) and CDMA (digital) signal formats. Most cellular coverage expansions will be digital rather than analog since key manufacturers are no longer producing analog phones so your choice of analog or digital phones will be quite limited. Dual Mode & Tri-Mode Digital phones provide a clear signal and long battery life when operating in digital mode but the battery life can be consumed quite quickly when operating in analog mode. Some digital phones are digital only while other may provide both digital & analog signal formats.
AMPS, Advanced Mobile Phone Service (analog): The AMPS standard has been the foundation for the cellular industry in North America. AMPS wireless transmission standard (technology) deployed in the 1980s in the United States and Canada operates at 800 MHz. Analog signals are better than digital in rural areas although the signal can sometimes be a little noisy in fringe areas. Expansions in cellular systems are more likely to be with digital only equipment so analog phones will not work in these new or expanded areas. Key manufacturers are no longer producing analog only cell phones, AMPS phones can not be used on CDMA or TDMA systems.
CDMA, Code Division Multiple Access (digital): signals are encoded using a pseudo-random sequence which corresponds to a different communication channel that the receiver also knows and can use to decode the received signal. CDMA is one of several "spread spectrum" techniques. CDMA offers improvements over analog transmission in the areas of reduced call dropping, battery power, more secure transmission and increased service options. Having said that and to make things a little more exciting, you may come across some Dual-Mode digital phones. These phones operate on both analog & digital systems (with a twist). The digital signal in some major centres operates on a different frequency, for simplicity sake, if you travel to some major centres these phones will only operate in analog mode and you will find your battery will not last too long. Instead, you should look at the Tri-Mode digital phones which will give you the best results when travelling. Most cellular expansions are more likely to be digital only expansions. CDMA cell phones can not be used on TDMA or GSM systems.

The new 1xRTT network (commonly know as 1x) provides the foundation for an entirely new generation of mobile applications offering you the ability to personalize your phone with services such as ring-tones and screen savers or download a game if you are so inclined. 1x is an enhanced CDMA network but with a faster more efficient way of transmitting data and checking emails. The key benefit of 1x is its capabilities of transmitting data at speeds of up to 153 kilobits per second but on average you will experience transfer speeds of 50 – 100 kilobits per second*. This is considerably faster than CDPD service with a peak data transmission speed of 19.2 kb ps. Mobile Browser service and Digital Data to GO are circuit-switched services that transmit at only 14 kb ps. Once a data session is initiated on 1x it uses an “Always On” connection, which means you are only billed for the data transferred, rather than time used.

Global System for Mobile communications (GSM): This is the operating system standard in Europe, Asia, Australia & Africa, It is also used in a similar fashion in areas of North America but again this has a twist! The European GSM signal differs from that used in North America so be careful when purchasing a phone that you think will operate all over the world - it won't. In Canada GSM is available but only in very limited areas such as major centres & corridors, so if you never go off the beaten path....... ???

Note: By changing the SIM card of your GSM phone you could use the phone in Europe and in limited North American cities but it is quite an expensive solution if you are making the changes only for a short business trip or vacation. Solution, rent a phone in the country you are travelling to.
